Uncharted Interactive’s Goal

“We make games we want to play, and hope you like them too.”- UI Team

In January of 2010 a group of friends got together to make a game called Kernips. Despite Kernip’s simplicity it helped establish the momentum needed to continue developing games. Since gathering additional friends and industry hopefuls we decided our developing “company” needed a name. The name Uncharted Interactive became official in January of 2011.

Now with the website and the release of Kernips, Uncharted Interactive is on it’s way to a hopeful future in the business of independent game development.

Meet the Team

Robert Hornbek

“Everybody is a genius.  But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” ~ Albert Einstein

About Robert
Entertaining others has always been a large part of my life. As a kid I would tell jokes, sing songs and act out bizarre scenarios taking on far-fetched personalities. Later I used the family video camera (VHS!) to create short films, my first was a story about pod racing (Star Wars) staring my younger brother and sister. Since the first time I played Sonic the Hedgehog I knew video games were going to be a big part of my life. Now, I passionately enjoy designing games to fulfill my desire to entertain. With every game I create I fulfill that desire to entertain the masses and I aim to continue proving and improving myself as an entertainer.

Project Manager/Designer

Sonja Just

“Nothing limits achievement like small thinking; nothing expands possibilities like unleashed imagination.” ~ William Arthur Ward

About Sonja
I am a creative minded person who is primarily a video editor but I like being involved in as many creative projects as I can. I love puzzle games, rpgs, adventure games, card games and board games. To name a few: Tetris, Mercury Meltdown, Bust a Move, Zombie Flux, Disgaea, Scrabble, Katamari, DDR, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario Bros. Thus is what brought me to work on marketing for games at Uncharted Interactive. My interest in marketing and advertising was inspired from my time in school when I edited commercials and I loved doing it. I believe I can use my editing skills and media knowledge to get others interested in our products. I joined the Uncharted Interactive team because I want to be involved in creative projects and be a part of an awesome team. I also want the opportunity to use social media as a marketing platform. I hope to popularize many games with this team and maybe even become a designer myself.

“Strength without determination means nothing, and determination without strength is equally useless” ~ Godo Kisaragi

About the Guardian
I was born and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I am a self-taught pianist/composer. I eventually went to Old Dominion University to hone my Music Composition Skills. I’ve always loved games and the music in them. I want developing them in my life. Some of my favorite games are Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Mario Kart 64, pretty much anything with a sword and a story. When I’m not designing games I am playing Ultimate Frisbee, Body Building/Power Lifting, Writing, playing D&D, Getting Lost, and Trolling Trolls.
I am inspired by anything epic and anyone who tells me I cannot do something.
The Uncharted Interactive team is a part of me. I did not join it, it awakened inside me. At Uncharted Interactive I hope to achieve a simple, yet refined product that is fun for all generations of people and the confidence to pursue a larger scale game development.

“Absence sharpens love, presence strengthens it.” ~ Benjamin Franklin

About Andy
Hi! My name is Andy! :D Since before I can remember (5!) I’ve loved doing things unrelated to each other. Playing Games. Martial Arts. Playing Games. Music. Playing Games. Recording audio randomness. Fast forward to 2012 and I am doing both, playing games and making every hit, fall, bump, jump, and tool – sound cool.  I have been playing games for the better part of 25 years and been professionally involved in the Audio Industry for 5. I am the Lead sound designer and other resident audio guy (yeah Corbet!) in Uncharted Interactive.  On a more personal level – I am from Philly. I write and remix music (D.I.C.A.) I Love Food!

R. 2teve Warren

“I can stand brute force, but brute reason is quite unbearable. There is something unfair about its use. It is hitting below the intellect.” ~ Oscar Wilde (The Picture of Dorian Gray)

About 2teve
Moorpark College is where I learned the basics of Programming, though many of the Computer skills I have been gathering together in order to do interesting projects. My love for gaming began at a young age when my elder brother introduced me to both videogames and pencil/paper RPGs. My first hand experience with fencing (sword fighting) and study of magick and religions lead me to believe, as a GM/DM, that there could be a better fighting system established for RPGs. After this I began creating my own system for everything that seemed lacking and it eventually bloomed into its own world and set of rules. I hope that one day they could all be implemented into a videogame. As an extension of my anal-retentive nature that became apparent in creating the framework for RPGs, I spent several years learning computer programming. While an avid gamer (and even an old school paper & pencil RPGer), it was really Robert’s influence that solidified the idea of being a part of the crazy process of making games. With this project I am trying to learn new things and stretch and grow (both personally and professionally) along with Uncharted Interactive.

Joanna Johnen

“People who are certain, tend to miss the whole.” ~ Doctor Who

About Joanna
I was born and raised in California. Ever since I was little, I loved to draw. I fell in love with animation when my kindergarten class took a field trip to see Disney’s Fantasia. The Night on Bald Mountain sequence caused my classmates to run screaming from their seats within the theater. The fact that art and music could come together and illicit such an audience response was amazing and incredibly attractive. I am currently working toward my BFA degree in Animation/Illustration at San Jose State University. In my spare time I go out sketching, painting, and people watching. I like science fiction, warm cups of tea, and the sound of people flipping animation paper.

Rishon Wagner

“You can never have too much hat!”

About Rishon
I graduated from San Jose Sate University with a BFA in animation. I have a very strong background in drawing fundamentals, but I spend most of my time drawing cartoons. I love to create concepts and ideas. Uncharted Interactive represents a new and interesting challenge for me, designing for games. I enjoy working as part of a team and I am very excited about working on it. My favorite part of the process is when a finished product has been achieved. It is a great feeling to see everyone’s hard work come together.

Steve (Brother Steve) Hornbek

“You fought the rest, now try the best!” ~ Rufus (Street Fighter 4)

About Brother Steve
If I could put my mind on paper I would need a lot more napkins to soak up all the blood from my oozing skull. Thinking literally never got me far in creativity. However, I am an artist! We’re different… right?  Succumbed to daily labor, whether it be a screaming face or my own half brained schemes to act as God and create a world best to my liking on paper, I toll each day praying that my hand will be that much better day by day. Each project is a long process full of disappointment and fleeting success. Its like I am searching for the perfect picture, the holy grail of art that I can look at on a wall and feel at peace with the world only to be welcomed by my next failure. Art was never a means of creating the finished product; it is my journey from one failure to the next. Every fingernails worth of led on paper I look at from my own hands is a mark of dissatisfaction in my eyes because it is not what I am truly searching for. This does not stop me though, it is my driving force.

Stephen (DJ Steve) Reider

“I believe that there are still people who believe that game music is something equal to just an effect incorporated into the game, something like a BGM. And therefore this is something that I would like to show that is not true.” ~ Nobuo Uematsu

About DJ Steve
I grew up in California and am now finishing up law school in Washington. I started writing music in high school as a hobby, and over time it developed into a passion of mine. Although I’m going to law school, I’m also constantly pursuing a career in music. I’m always looking for a good excuse to sit down and write music. I believe that in the design process, the director, artists, and composer should all throw their ideas together to inspire one another. No part of the design process should be thrown in at the last minute. I want music to be just as much a part of the whole design process as art or level design. This is a great team to be a part of, and I’m looking forward to working with the Uncharted Interactive in the future.
